Sujood The Way it should be done

I noticed many of us go to Ruku or Sujood and get up so fast, some don’t even take the time to say "Subhana Rabi Al Azeem e Wabe Hamd" 3 times…and say it only once!

Well, I have good news for you today… I have news that will make you today onwards go to Ruku or Sujood with a different feeling and different timing.

The Prophet Peace be upon him said: When a slave stands and prays, all his sins are brought and placed on his head and shoulders. Every time he bows or prostrates, some of them fall from him.” SubhanAllah!

So from now on when you stand up to pray, imagine all your sins being placed on your head and shoulders and when you go to Ruku and Sujood, stay longer to lose as many as you can and picture them falling down and away from you. Understand the purpose of praying… this will help you concentrate.

When you go to the position of Ruku, feel and tell Allah with your heart that you will never kneel to anyone but him and picture those sins falling down.

And when you say "Sami'Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears who thanks Him) and you say "Rabbana lakal Hamd" (Thanks to you my Lord) you are thanking Him for honoring you and making you stand straight not like the other creatures who walk on four with their back bent. Thank Him for making you able to move and pray.

When you go to the first Sajdah (you put your head down on the floor) you are representing the earth which you came from and when you get up.after the first Sajdah you are representing the first time He created you from the earth.

When you go on the second Sajdah again on the ground, you are representing when you die and you go back to the ground and when you get up the second time you are representing the second time when Allah will bring you back from the dead on the Day of Judgment, therefore, concentrate with every movement and feel it.

Make a lot of du'a in Sujood and remember du'a is ibadat and Allah loves those who ask Him…ask Him and beg Him… complain to Him… you are better off complaining to Him than to humans….He will never betray you, He will never let you down, He will never look down on you and He is the only one who can answer your needs with your head held high.

Do you know the reason you say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is great) every time you move in a prayer?
It’s a reminder that Allah is greater than anything you might be thinking about from this world. So be honest when you say "Allahu Akbar" and remember He is greater than anything that is occupying your mind while you pray.

Do you know when you stand up to pray and say "Allahu Akbar", Allah stands before you and the minute your mind goes wondering on silly things in this life, Allah turns His face away from you and says (Is there something better than me taking you away from me?)

SubhanAllah, how blessed are we to have Allah meet us and let us stand before Him 5 times a day, to listen to us and to our problems and to grant us our wishes and forgives us for our sins every day. You say "Allahu Akbar and He is there, you don’t need to stand in front of His door for hours or take an appointment or meet a mediator or a secretary, how generous is He?

Hopefully we will all from today pray differently and enjoy our prayers like never before Insha Allah. Yaa Allah taqabbal salaatana... Ya Allah accept our Salah, grant us the ability to pray with khushu, with full concentration, devotion, and in the correct manner. Aameen Aameen Aameen!
A simple beautiful way for our sins to be forgiven.

~ don't forget to put this into practice which will only add to Khushu in our Salah.

Common Islamic Terminologies

The use of Islamic Terminology in our daily affairs is something we all indulge in, though largely unconciously, since it is a way of communicating that is ingrained in us, as intrinsically as manners and character are..
  • AL-HAMDU LILLAHI RABBIL 'ALAMINThis is a verse from the Qur'an that we recite and say many times per day. Other than being recited daily during prayers, a mumineen reads this expression in every activity of his daily life.
The meaning of it is: "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds."
A mumineen invokes the praises of Allah before he does his daily work; and when he finishes, he thanks Allah for His favors. We are grateful to Allah for all His blessings. It is a statement of thanks, appreciation, and gratitude from the creature to his Creator.
  • ALLAHU AKBARThis statement is said numerous times. During the call for prayer, during prayer, when we are happy, and wish to express our approval of what we hear, when we sacrifice an animal, and when we want to praise a speaker. It is the most often repeated expression in the world.
Its meaning: "Allah is the Greatest."
A mumineen praises Allah in every aspect of life.
  • ASSALAMU ALAIKUMThis is an expression Muslims say whenever we meet one another. It is a statement of greeting with peace.
The meaning of it is: "Peace be upon you."
The other forms are: "Assalamu 'Alalikum Wa Rahmatullah," which means:"May the peace and the Mercy of Allah be upon you," and "Assalamu Alalikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatohu," which means :"May the peace, the mercy, and the blessings of Allah be upon you."
  • WA 'ALAIKUM AS-SALAMThis is an expression that a Muslim is to say as an answer for the greeting. When a person greets another with a salutation of peace, the answer for the greeting is an answer of peace.
The meaning of this statement is: "And upon you is the peace."
The other expressions are: " Wa Alaikum as-Salam Wa Rahmatullah." and "Wa 'Alaikum as-Salam Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh."
  • LA ILAHA ILLALLAHThis expression is the most important one in Islam. It is the creed that every person has to say to be considered a Muslim.
The meaning of this statement is: " There is no god except Allah."
  • SUBHANAHU WA TA'ALAThis is an expression that is used whenever the name of Allah is pronounced or written.
The meaning of this expression is: "Allah is pure of having partners and He is exalted from having a son."
We believe that Allah is the only God, the Creator of the Universe. He does not have partners or children. Sometimes Muslims use other expressions when the name of Allah is written or pronounced. Some of which are: "'Azza Wa Jall": He is the Mighty and the Majestic; "Jalla Jalalahu": He is the exalted Majestic.
S.W.T. These letters are abbreviations for the words of "Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala".
  • ASTAGHFIRULLAHThis is an expression used when we want to ask Allah's forgiveness.
The meaning of it is: "I ask Allah for forgiveness."
A Muslim says this phrase many times, even when he is talking to another person. When a Muslim abstains from doing wrong, or even when he wants to prove that he is innocent of an incident he uses this expression. After every Salah (prayer), mumineen perform a tesbih on this word.
  • SADAQALLAHUL 'AZIMThis is a statement of truth that we say after reading any number of verses from the Qur'an.
The meaning of it is: "Allah says the truth."
The Qur'an is the exact words of Allah in verbatim. When Allah speaks, He says the truth; and when the Qur'an is being recited, a Muslim is reciting the words of truth of Allah.
  • IN SHA' ALLAHWhen a person wishes to plan for the future, when he promises, when he makes resolutions, and when he makes a pledge, he makes them with permission and the will of Allah. For this reason, we use the Qur'anic instructions by saying "In Sha ' Allah."
The meaning of this statement is: "If Allah wills."
We are to strive hard and to put our trust in Allah. We leave the results in the hands of Allah.
  • INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHI RAJI'UNWhen a Muslim is struck with a calamity, when he loses one of his loved ones, or when he has gone bankrupt, he should be patient and say this statement.
The meaning of it is : "We are from Allah and to whom we are returning."
We believe that Allah is the One who gives and it is He who takes away. He is testing us. Hence, a Muslim submits himself to Allah. He is grateful and thankful to Allah for whatever he gets. On the other hand, he is patient and says this expression in times of turmoil and calamity.
  • JAZAKALLAHU KHAYRANThis is a statement of thanks and appreciation to be said to the person who does a favor. Instead of saying "thanks" (Shukran), the Islamic statement of thanks is to say this phrase.
Its meaning is: "May Allah reward you best"
It is understood that human beings can't repay one another enough. Hence, it is better to request Almighty Allah to reward the person who did a favor and to give him the best.
  • MA SHA' ALLAH
This is an expression that is used whenever we are excited and surprised or to express our happiness.
The meaning of "Ma sha' Allah" is: "Whatever Allah wants." or "Whatever Allah wants to give, He gives."
This means that whenever Allah gives something good to someone, blesses him, honors him, and opens the door of success in business, a Muslim says this statement of "Ma Sha' Allah."

Benefits of FASTING

Fasting is not only a physical but also a spiritual exercise that has many lasting benefits.

1. Heightened consciousness of Allah
Fasting helps you to become less preoccupied with bodily appetite, and gives the heart and mind the freedom to reflect upon deeper spiritual matters, such as your relationship with Allah and with fellow human beings. It enables a person to develop sustained consciousness of Allah (Takwa).

2. Healthy lifestyle
A fasting person learns restraint and only responds to hunger and thirst in a heightened level of conciousness and discipline . Through fasting, a person begins to appreciate the value of food. In the Quran, ''healthy and wholesome food'' is desciribed as the best of provisions. Thus fasting makes a person to choose a healthier life style by making small but lasting changes to their daily diet.

3. Compassion and charity
When fasting, you should think of those in need who may be fasting but have no food at the start or the end of their fast, those whose tiny children are also having to go hungry because of poverty. The Prophet Muhammad described Ramadan as “the month of mercy”. His companions observed: “The Prophet (Muhammad) was the most generous of people, but he would be his most generous during Ramadan …”

4. Community spirit
During Ramadan, the one who fasts has heightened concerns for the well-being of the community – rich and
poor, intellectuals and labourers. Community spirit is promoted as people start fasting at the same time and break their fast at the same time, and reflect together through longer prayer and deeper devotions. It is greatly encouraged to break fast together.

5. A fast without the spirit is empty of blessing
Abstention for long hours can be very hard physically and spiritually. However, by the end of the long month you should feel cleansed and with a renewed spirit. Ramadan is an ideal time to break bad habits, to reflect on personality and to improve your character. Those who fast but make no change to their lives except
delaying a meal cannot really expect to become any different in their behavior during or after Ramadan. In
many ways, this is a wasted fast, as stressed in a number of sayings of the blessed Prophet: fasting is not merely “abstention from eating and drinking, but also from vain speech and foul language”.
Fasting is, therefore, about much more than just giving up food and drink and hoping to lose a couple of pounds.

By fasting, a person reflects, acts and betters his or her character.

Halal Haram food

What is Halal food ?
The following products are definitely Halal:
1. Milk (from cows, sheep, camels, and goats)

2. Honey

3. Fish

4. Plants which are not intoxicant

5. Fresh or naturally frozen vegetables

6. Fresh or dried fruits

7. Legumes and nuts like peanuts, cashew nuts, hazel nuts, walnuts, etc.

8. Grains such as wheat, rice, rye, barley, oat, etc.

Animals such as cows, sheep, goats, deer, moose, chickens, ducks, game birds, etc., are also Halal, but
they must be Zabihah (slaughtered according to Islamic Rites) in order to be suitable for consumption. The procedure is as follows: the animal must be slaughtered by a Muslim. The animal should be put down on the ground (or held it if it is small) and its throat should be slit with a very sharp knife to make sure that the 3 main blood vessels are cut. While cutting the throat of the animal (without severing it), the person must pronounce
the name of Allah or recite a blessing which contains the name of Allah, such as "Bismillah Allah-u-Akbar".

What is Haraam food?
1. Meat from swine - pork, ham, gammon, bacon, etc

2. Pork-based products and by-products -sausages, gelatine etc

3. Animals improperly slaughtered, or already dead before slaughtering is due to take place

4. Animals killed in the name of anyone other than Allah.

5. Intoxicants

6. Most carnivorous animals, birds of prey and land animals without external ears (i.e., snakes, reptiles,
worms, insects etc.)

7. Blood and blood by-products

8. Foods contaminated with any of the above products.

While many things are clearly halal or clearly haraam, there are some things which are not clear.
These items are considered questionable or suspect and more information is needed to categorise them
as halal or haraam. Such items are often referred to as Mashbooh, which means doubtful or questionable. Food falling into this category should be treated as haraam until you know otherwise.

Health Guidelines for Ramadan

Recently received email article describing health guidelines for Ramadan month. I find it useful and hope you will also like it.

This article provides useful advice on how to avoid some common problems encountered in Ramadan. If followed, it would enable one to fast comfortably and enjoy fully the spiritual benefits of Ramadan.

During the holy month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. The diet should be such that we maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining. However,  if one is over-weight, Ramadan is an ideal time to normalize one's weight.

In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fibre containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods.
Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours.

* Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley,  wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, whole meal flour, unpolished rice, etc. (called complex carbohydrates).
* Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. (called refined carbohydrates).
 * Fibre-containing foods are bran-containing foods, whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, sem (papry), marrow, mealies, spinach, and other herbs like methie, the leaves of beetroot (iron-rich), fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc.

The foods eaten should be well-balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heart-burn, and weight problems.

AVOID

* Fried and fatty foods.
 * Foods containing too much sugar.
 * Over-eating especially during the meal before Dawn (sehri. or suhur)
 * Too much tea during the meal before Dawn (sehri. or suhur). Tea makes you pass more urine taking with it valuable mineral salts that your body would need during the day.

EAT

* Complex carbohydrates during the meal before Dawn (sehri. or suhur) so that the food lasts longer making you less hungry.
 * Haleem is an excellent source of protein and is a slow-burning food.
 * Dates are excellent source of sugar, fibre, carbohydrates, potassium and magnesium.
 * Almonds are rich in protein and fibre with less fat.
 * Bananas are a good source of potassium, magnesium and carbohydrates.

DRINK

* As much water or fruit juices as possible between iftar  (Breaking fasting) and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time.

Common Medical Problems

CONSTIPATION
Constipation can cause piles (haemorroids), fissures (painful cracks in anal canal) and indigestion with a bloated feeling.

Causes: Too much refined foods, too little water and not enough fibre in the diet.
Remedy: Avoid excessive refined foods, increase water intake, use bran in baking, brown flour when making roti.

INDIGESTION AND WIND
Causes: Over-eating. Too much fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods that produce wind e.g. eggs, cabbage, lentils, carbonated drinks like Cola also produce gas.

Remedy: Do not over-eat, drink fruit juices or better still drink water. Avoid fried foods, add ajmor to wind-producing foods.

LETHARGY ('low blood pressure')
Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from sitting position, pale appearance and feeling faint are symptoms associated with "low blood pressure". This tends to occur towards the afternoon.

Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake.

Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake.

Caution: Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood
pressure reading when symptoms are present. Persons with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadan. They should consult their
doctor.

HEADACHE
Causes: Caffeine withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep, hunger usually occur as the day goes by and worsens at the end of the day. When associated with "low blood pressure", the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before Iftar (Breaking Fasting).

Remedy: Cut down caffeine slowly starting a week or two before Ramadan. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganize your schedule during the Ramadan so as to have adequate sleep.

LOW BLOOD SUGAR
Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), unable to perform physical activities, headache, palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar.

Causes in non-diabetics: Having too much sugar i.e. refined carbohydrates especially during the meal before Dawn (sehri or suhur) . The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop.

Remedy: Eat something at suhur (sehri) and limit sugar-containing foods and drinks.

Caution: Diabetics may need to adjust their medication in Ramadan, consult your doctor.

MUSCLE CRAMPS
Causes: Inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium foods.

Remedy: Eat foods rich in the above minerals e.g. vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat and dates.

Caution: Those on high blood pressure medication and with kidney stone problems should consult their doctor.

PEPTIC ULCERS, HEART BURN, GASTRITIS AND HIATUS HERNIA
Increased acid levels in the empty stomach in Ramadan aggravate the above conditions. It presents as a burning feeling in the stomach area under the ribs and can extend upto the throat. Spicy foods, coffee, and Cola drinks worsen these conditions.

Medications are available to control acid levels in the stomach. People with proven peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia should consult their doctor well before Ramadan.

KIDNEY STONES
Kidney stones may occur in people who have less liquids to drink.
Therefore, it is essential to drink extra liquids so as to prevent stone formation.

JOINT PAINS
Causes: The  increased pressure on the knee joints during Salat. In the elderly and those with arthritis this may result in pain, stiffness, swelling and discomfort.

Remedy: Lose weight so that the knees do not have to carry any extra load. Exercise the lower limbs . Being physically fit allows greater fulfilment, thus enabling one to be able to perform salat with ease.

Ashura Poem

The Day the Skies Wept Blood
The tenth dawn of Islam's new year, Seventy-two of the  bravest who had nothing to fear,
Came out to battle for our pride,
Knowing that the journey to Heaven would be their very  next ride.

On the blistering sands, under the scorching sun,
Stood the mighty Hussein, a soldier second to none,
With the fragrance of musk, it had to be said,
The skies of Karbala were already turning red.

Every ally wanted the honor of being first,
To drink the honey of paradise and quench their
  thirst,
As each one's body fell on the sand and mud,
It was Ashura, the day the skies wept blood.

A marriage in the tent during this grieving hour,
Abdullah knew that the time was not far,
In the attire of a groom, He set out to fight,
Realizing the loss, Sakina cried throughout that
  night.

Abbas did not even drink a sip from the river,
But was hit by arrows from the trees' rear,
Hussein's final support ascended to the heavens,
It was now only Hussein and those inhumane devils.

But, Ali Akbar, the very valiant youngster the world
has seen,   Was hit in the heart during the pinnacle of His teens,
The face of the Prophet (SA) with blood was smeared,
Hussein's tears completely drenched His beard.

Asgar, the courageous six month old prince,
Fought for Islam's pride without hesitance,
Until that heartless satan let his arrow fly,
Young Ali Asgar's blood was taken by the sky.

Hussein ibn Ali, the Noble Son, and The Greatest
Martyr,   Stood ready to fight with absolutely no fear,
Until a teary eyed Jibrael descended from the Heavens,
Allah's wish is Your sacrifice Oh Highborn Eminence.

  Hussein happily welcomed Allah's Missive,
Bowed down to Sajdah for the future billions,
Zainab, cried aloud at the sight of Her mind's eye,
Upon witnessing Her imperial brother peacefully die.

Princess Sakina with Her cheeks so blue,
From all the slapping that mad man put Her through,
Those hellion's horses were allowed to run,
And on the Holy Bodies, further damage was done.

Tears roll down my cheeks as I pen these verses,
Remembering the pain of Hussein and His masses,
But if it wasn't for Hussein we wouldn't be where
we are,   We wouldn't be Mumins.
